Why the Holy Spirit Matters
From the very beginning, God designed His people to rely on the Holy Spirit. He is the source of strength that lifts us above the pull of the world, the Guide who leads us into truth, and the power that equips us for God’s assignments. In a time when confusion and deception are spreading rapidly, ignoring Him is dangerous.
Jesus Himself gave this warning: false wonders would appear that could mislead “if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24). Without the Spirit’s voice and power, believers are vulnerable. Dependence on the Spirit isn’t a side issue—it’s the very heartbeat of a victorious life.
Understanding Who He Is
For many, the Holy Spirit is either misunderstood or overlooked. Some grew up in churches where He was rarely mentioned, others simply haven’t been taught about His role. Yet everything changes once we grasp His importance in our life. And God’s plan for sending Him to those who love Jesus.
Look at the example of Jesus: His teaching, His miracles, His acts of deliverance—every single one was carried out through the Spirit. If the Son of God leaned on the Spirit, how much more must we?
Jesus said plainly, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”
—John 16:7
The Spirit is our Helper. He counsels us, strengthens us, convicts us, distributes spiritual gifts to believers, and points us continually to Jesus.
Beyond Salvation
It’s true that the Spirit brings conviction of sin and new birth—we cannot belong to Christ without Him. But Scripture also shows there is more. A deeper encounter. A fuller measure of His presence that empowers and equips us to walk through life as overcomers in a fallen world.
Paul once asked believers in Ephesus, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” Their response was, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
—Acts 19:2
A few verses later: “And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”
—Acts 19:6
That filling in those who had placed their trust in Jesus, brought power to live boldly and minister effectively. Just like salvation, this second filling begins with a choice—but it must also be renewed daily.
Walking in the Spirit
Christianity was never meant to be an accessory to life; it’s meant to be the surrender of life. The center that directs all aspects of our life. The Spirit doesn’t ask for a guest room in our house—we choose to live in His house where He is on the throne. When we yield our pride and let Him lead, He fills us with strength and wisdom that goes far beyond natural ability.
Paul urged the church in Ephesus: “Be filled with the Spirit.” The meaning in the original language is “keep on being filled.” It’s a lifestyle, not a one-time moment. It’s how we live out Matthew 16:24. “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” And its the way we avoid being deceived: “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24).
That means today—and every day—we invite Him to guide our steps. We ask daily for fresh filling. We give Him our concerns, and our plans. In return, He enables us to walk in power, discern deception, and accomplish what God asks of us, which fulfills the Scripture: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” —Romans 8:28
With His Spirit alive within us, the impossible becomes possible.
And we know: with God, nothing is impossible!
