Friends,
Over the years I have received thousands of emails from readers asking sincere spiritual questions. Some questions are simple. Others are deeply personal. Every now and then a question arrives that opens the door to a truth that can change a person’s spiritual life in a powerful way. Recently I received one of those questions.
Before we begin let me pause and say thank you. Many of you write emails, pray for us, and support the work Paula and Kara and I are doing. Because of you, we are reaching tens of thousands of people every week with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the pure, clear Word of God. Your partnership means more than you know.
Recently I received an email from Erica. She asked a very honest question:
“Dale, when you talk about the Holy Spirit, does that mean speaking in tongues? Is speaking in tongues biblical? What is your opinion about praying in the Spirit?”
That’s a thoughtful question, and it deserves a thoughtful answer.
Today I want to share something that has had a profound impact on my spiritual life. It’s something that many believers misunderstand, avoid, or simply never explore.
I’m talking about the power of the Holy Spirit, specifically the gift many people call speaking in tongues.
Now I realize this subject can sound strange to some people. Some assume it is emotional hype or something reserved only for a small group of highly expressive Christians. But that simply isn’t true.
I’m not a preacher by background. I didn’t grow up in a ministry home. My life has been rooted in aviation, science, and logical thinking.
I’ve spent years studying aeronautical science, physics, and even some pre-medical training. My mother once hoped I would become a medical doctor. Under the supervision of a physician friend, I even conducted several full medical autopsies. I’ve always been fascinated by things that are logical, measurable, and provable.
Yet even with that background, I have learned something important:
God is not limited by human reasoning.
The greatest minds in the world still struggle to understand the mysteries of Heaven. Our language, our logic, and even our best theology can only go so far.
God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts. His ways are higher than our ways.
And sometimes the truths of God don’t just educate the mind — they ignite the spirit.
One of those truths involves the Holy Spirit.
When a believer receives the infilling of the Holy Spirit, something remarkable can happen. The Spirit of God desires to give that believer a new language for prayer. Many call it speaking in tongues.
Personally, I often refer to it as my prayer language. That phrase simply helps people feel more comfortable with the concept. But whatever term you use, the experience is deeply powerful.
This prayer language is not limited by culture, education, vocabulary, or intellect.
In many ways, it bypasses the limitations of the human mind.
When we pray with our own understanding, we naturally pray about what we know. We pray about what we see. Our prayers are shaped by our knowledge, emotions, and vocabulary.
But when the Holy Spirit prays through us, something different happens.
The Spirit of God begins to intercede through us.
God’s will is being expressed in prayer — even when our minds cannot fully comprehend it.
And the result is something extraordinary.
Your inner spirit becomes strengthened.
You become spiritually refreshed.
You begin to experience a deeper connection with God.
And that leads us to a powerful picture that helps explain it.
Think about your cell phone.
Every day you use it, the battery drains. Eventually it must be recharged. If the battery drops to 50 percent, you plug it in and top it off. If the battery completely dies, you recharge it from zero.
Either way, the device needs power to function.
In a similar way, our spiritual life needs recharging.
For me personally, praying in the Spirit — yes, praying in tongues — has become one of the most powerful ways to recharge my spiritual life.
It strengthens my inner man.
It renews spiritual energy.
It reconnects my heart with Heaven.
And that is exactly what Jesus promised when He said He would send the Holy Spirit to empower believers.
The Holy Spirit is not something to fear or avoid.
He is God’s gift to strengthen His people.
I’ll share more about this in the next blog.

Thank you for the post. Inspiring and nourishing as always. Do you have any words of wisdom for how spiritually bear the stress of the escalating conflict in the Middle East, where we live?
Thank you Dale for this message, I have been thinking about speaking in tongues and wanting to for a long time now but didn’t know if it was right or if it was something not from God when I tried. Don’t know how too ! Don
Don, thank you for sharing that—that’s an honest place to be.
The desire you have to draw closer to God is a good thing. Scripture shows that the Holy Spirit gives gifts, and He does it in His way and His timing. It’s not something you have to force or figure out on your own.
The most important thing is to stay focused on your relationship with the Lord—spend time with Him, be open, and trust Him to lead you. He knows your heart, and He’ll guide you in what’s right for you.
Grateful you shared this, Don. Keep seeking Him
