In the business world, successful salespeople often learn the art of “benefit selling.” Rather than simply describing a product, they explain how it will improve a person’s life. They focus on the benefits: time saved, problems solved, peace gained, or goals achieved.
After a lifetime in business, aviation, and ministry, I can tell you that people naturally think in terms of benefits. We all want to know, “How will this help me?”
Surprisingly, Jesus Himself spoke about benefits.
In Mark 10:28–30, Peter said to Jesus:
“See, we have left all and followed You.”
At that moment, Peter still seemed to be thinking largely in earthly terms. But Jesus responded by revealing a much deeper truth:
“Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.” (Mark 10:29–30)
Notice what Jesus is saying. Following Him is not merely about what we give up. It is also about what we gain.
The Christian life is not a life of loss. It is a life of exchange. When we sincerely place Christ first, He promises provision, relationships, purpose, spiritual family, and eternal rewards. He sees every sacrifice made for His Kingdom.
At the same time, Jesus reminds us that blessings do not come without challenges. He specifically mentions persecutions. Yet even those difficulties cannot cancel His promises.
This passage is not an invitation to greed, selfish ambition, or covetousness. Rather, it is a reminder that God is not a taker. He is a giver. When we surrender something to Him out of love and obedience, He has a way of multiplying blessings back into our lives according to His wisdom and timing.
The faithful believer enjoys benefits that the world cannot provide: God’s presence, His protection, His provision, His peace, and the certainty of eternal life.
As you go about your day, keep God’s promises in your heart, in your mind, and upon your lips. Speak them humbly. Believe them confidently. Expect them faithfully.
Our Heavenly Father delights in keeping His Word.
Remember: The Christian life is not a life of loss. “It is a life of exchange.”
This captures the heart of what Jesus was teaching Peter in this passage.
