Every day, whether we recognize it or not, you and I encounter the reality of evil. Sometimes it comes at us from the outside—in the form of temptation, opposition, or injustice. Other times, we battle it within our own hearts and minds. If we’re honest, most of us would admit that we don’t always come out victorious. Not because we don’t want to—but because we haven’t fully grasped how to overcome it.

God’s Word doesn’t leave us guessing. It lays out a clear path. And it begins with this sobering truth: we only have two choices.

  • Either we conquer evil, or
  • We are conquered by evil.

There is no neutral ground. The apostle Paul put it plainly in Romans 12:21: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (NKJV)

Evil and good are opposites that cannot co-exist, just like darkness disappears the moment light enters the room. In the same way, evil will always dominate unless it is actively overpowered by good.

What My Years in Aviation Taught Me

After decades as a professional pilot and accident investigator, there’s a phrase I’ve heard countless times: “Wise men learn from experience. Wiser men learn from the experience of others.”

When it comes to spiritual battles, the very best “experience” to lean on is the testimony of Scripture itself. Even if we don’t yet understand it, God’s Word proves true every time. Jesus taught in Matthew 7:24, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

In the same way that faith conquers fear, and forgiveness overcomes bitterness, only one power in the universe can defeat evil—and that is the power of God’s goodness.

Where the Power Comes From

When evil rises against us, human strength is not enough. We can’t “out-muscle” satan with our own goodness or effort. Only God’s goodness can prevail. And praise God, He has placed that power at our disposal through Jesus Christ.

How do we access it? By staying connected to Jesus through His Word. The Bible is our source of divine wisdom, strength, and guidance. That’s why we must be cautious—just as a warning light flashes in the cockpit when something is wrong, I’ll sound a spiritual warning for you: don’t rely on watered-down paraphrases or versions twisted by religious agendas. Stick to a faithful translation of Scripture, because your life depends on it.

The Key to the Conflict

Now here’s the crucial revelation you need to grasp if you want lasting victory. Evil isn’t just a vague influence or an abstract concept. And don’t mistake it for “bad luck.” Evil is personal.

It is not something.
It is someone.

Scripture makes it clear: satan is “the adversary”—the one who resists and opposes both God and His people. Every weapon he wields has its root in evil.

But the good news is this: “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” —1 John 4:4 (NKJV)

That’s the key. Victory is possible—not by striving in your own strength—but by walking in the greater power of God’s Spirit within you. How do you do that? By knowing and agreeing with God’s Word. Then by living that word out in your life’s circumstances. It is not a feeling… but a choice—to agree with God.

Final Encouragement

Friend, the battle is real, but so is the victory. God has already given His people the resources to prevail, but we must choose to use them. Every time you choose to respond with love instead of hate, forgiveness instead of bitterness, and faith instead of fear—you are overcoming evil with good.

You remain in our hearts and prayers. And remember: with God, nothing is impossible!
