Living with Purpose When You Feel Like Giving Up

In today’s world, it’s easy to feel tired, discouraged, and even wish we could just go to Heaven now. The loss of loved ones, the stress of life, and the evil we see around us can make us long for relief. But when we take that attitude, we reveal that our lives are not yet fully surrendered to our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our times are in His hands—not ours. As followers of Jesus, our calling is to occupy while we’re here on earth. He placed each of us in this particular time and asks us to keep living for His purposes until He calls us home or returns to rescue us.

What Does “Occupy Until I Come” Mean?

The phrase comes from Jesus’ parable in Luke 19. In the story, a nobleman goes away to receive his kingdom and tells his servants, “Occupy till I come.” When he returns, he rewards those who used what he gave them to serve and multiply good, and he judges the one who did nothing. The lesson is clear: God expects His people to be faithful and productive while waiting for His return.

Every believer has been given gifts, time, and opportunities to use for God’s glory. When we withdraw in fear or self-pity, we waste what He has entrusted to us. When we stay surrendered, even in hardship, we show that we trust His plan and timing more than our own desires.

Standing Firm in Changing Times

Life feels unstable, and the world seems to change by the minute. But 1 Corinthians 15:57-58 reminds us: “Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore … be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.”

To be steadfast means to stay grounded in the truth—remembering that Jesus has already overcome the world. We can face loss, fear, and uncertainty knowing that victory is certain.
To be immovable means not letting trials shake our faith or hope. Our purpose is eternal, not limited to this life. Even in grief, we keep our eyes on Christ and continue His work.

Living with Purpose

Following Jesus means living with surrendered hearts. Even when we don’t understand what God is doing, we can choose to trust Him. While we are still here, we have work to do—praying, encouraging others, sharing the hope of salvation, and using our resources for God’s kingdom.

We are to remember God’s directive to us, just as He gave to Joshua:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed,
for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Our job is to stay faithful and obedient. He decides when our race is finished. Until then, let’s live each day ready, surrendered, and serving—occupying until He comes.

And remember, with God, nothing is impossible!
