Have you ever found it difficult to truly sense God’s nearness? Do your times of prayer feel distant or disconnected?
Scripture tells us that God is enthroned upon the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3). That means our praise isn’t just noise—it’s an invitation. Worship opens the door for divine encounter, fellowship and relationship. It welcomes the very presence of God into our midst and into our hearts.
Let’s look at a powerful passage together: Psalm 95:1–2; 6–8 (NKJV)
“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.
Today, if you will hear His voice: Do not harden your hearts…”
This passage outlines a clear journey—a way to draw closer to God. It begins with vocal praise: “Let us sing… shout joyfully…” This joyful expression of thanks leads us to a deeper place: worship.
Worship is more than music or words. It’s a posture of the heart—humility, reverence, and surrender before our Creator. As we kneel—literally or symbolically—we acknowledge God’s authority and open our hearts to His voice.
Notice the progression in the psalm: once we kneel and submit, we become able to hear. “Today, if you will hear His voice…” Hearing God is not passive; it’s intentional. And sadly, many believers never truly learn to discern His voice, even though it’s essential for walking in His will.
Jesus echoed this same concern: Matthew 13:15 – “For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing…”
If your heart feels numb or your spiritual ears have dulled, there’s hope. God hasn’t moved—but sometimes we have. Repent. Return. Start with praise. Let it lead you into real worship—and don’t stop until your spirit is reawakened to His voice.
Psalm 95 ends with a warning: “Do not harden your hearts.” Why would we harden ourselves against the very God we love? Often, it’s pain. Disappointment. Unanswered prayers. Shame. Sin. These things can quietly build walls between us and God’s Spirit. But the solution is simple and profound: repentance. That’s where healing and reconnection begin.
God cannot dwell in a place where sin is coddled or rebellion is ignored. He is holy. If we harbor unconfessed sin or unforgiveness, we may be His children—but we won’t enjoy His presence. The Holy Spirit waits for us to clear the path.
We must return to the discipline of self-examination. Ask Him, like the psalmist did: Psalm 139:24-25 – “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
And when we fall short—which we all do—remember, we have an Advocate: Hebrews 4:15-16 – “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses… Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Jesus modeled this daily. He withdrew to quiet places to be with the Father—to listen, to worship, to be strengthened. That same access is yours. Invite the Holy Spirit to renew your spirit and saturate your life with God’s presence in tangible ways.
If you’re longing to feel closer to God, begin with praise. Make time for worship. Clear out distractions. Confess what needs to be confessed. God is already drawing near—He’s simply waiting for you to meet Him there.
Let’s not take for granted the privilege we’ve been given through Christ. Eternal life. Forgiveness. Healing. Restoration. Let us offer back what He desires most: a heart of worship.
Today is the perfect day to hear His voice.
