“Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads” Revelation 14:1.
Many have tried to claim this group and number as representing their particular cult or religious group, at least until their membership exceeded 144,000… then they had to change the definition of who this group is. It has also been said that this it represents certain elite Christians, with some believing they are part of this group.
To clear up, who these people are, we go back to scripture in the book of Daniel and Revelation. The last 7 years prior to Jesus beginning His rule of the Earth, are referred to as the 70th week of Daniel or the Prophecy of Seventy Weeks. During this 70th week God again turns His attention to dealing with Israel.
Even though the Church (true Christians) are still on earth for a portion of the final 7 years, God turns His attention once again to the nation of Israel and its people during the 70th week.
In the Book of Revelation, chapter 7, we learn that the 144,000 refers to the twelve tribes of Israel–12,000 from each tribe. These are selected individuals who are pure in heart and God directs His angels to seal them on their foreheads with His mark to prevent Satan from having any authority over them during the tribulation period.
These selected descendants of Abraham are hidden, protected and supplied by God throughout the second half of the final 7 years. At the end of this age when Jesus returns to take His place as the LORD of the earth, they will emerge in recognition of Jesus as their Messiah. These 144,000 descendants of Abraham will enter the Millennial Kingdom still alive, as servants of Jesus Christ.
Following is God’s directive to His angels in the middle of the final 7 years. “Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed” Revelation 7:3-4.
In verses 5-8 the details of the twelve tribes who make up this 144,000 are listed precisely. God’s end time plan is intricate and perfect. The more we recognize the detail and scope of all the LORD is doing, the more we experience the awe of His love and salvation.
