Does what we say really matter? After all, they are just words. The Bible has a lot to say about the words we speak, and Jesus often taught His disciples about the power of words.

“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says Mark 11:23.

When God created the heavens and the earth, he did it by speaking them into existence. He said, let there be, and there was. With all the power God has, He chose to use the spoken word to create the worlds, mankind, light, all that we see, and more. Jesus also used the spoken word to heal, deliver and to establish truth.

If we are created in God’s image and He created the worlds from nothing but the spoken word, then aren’t we to speak into existence (in faith) God’s will into our life?

Did you know that every waking moment people talk to themselves? Does that surprise you? The question really isn’t “Do you talk to yourself?” But instead, it’s  “What are you telling yourself?” Do you feed yourself the truth according to God? Or are you repeating the lies of the enemy?

Let’s consider that we are created in God’s image. Genesis 1:26 reminds us that when we are born-again, we are created to resemble the original—God. Not only are we created as a 3-part being: as a spirit, with a soul and in a body. But we were created with the power to create through faith and the spoken word.

God reminds us of the responsibility we have, to manage our creative ability in agreement with His will. Satan is continually trying to direct this creative power in a way that robs us of victory and also displays his dominion over us—through defeat, lack, sickness, disease, and destruction.

Remember, that in John 10:10, Jesus compared the two different lives we have available to us—the life Satan’s wants for us, or the life God wants for us. We cast the deciding vote. Will we agree with God or the devil?

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” John 10:10.

Which life are you living today? Your life will look like the seeds your have planted into it. I am not saying that we will not struggle or be tempted with tribulation… In fact, it is guaranteed that we will suffer persecution, tribulation and temptation. But if we remain in defeat or sickness or destruction year after year, it is because we are agreeing with that outcome, through our thoughts and with the words we speak—which gives our spirit power to create.

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit” Proverbs 18:21.

God is telling us that we will eat the fruit of what we say is true. Fruit can be life-giving or it can be deadly… depending on the seed. What seeds (words) are you planting in your life?

Are you sick and struggling with a physical condition that doctors say is getting worse, not better? Instead of seeing yourself as sick and trying to get well—instead, think of being “the healed through Jesus Christ,” and that Satan is trying to oppress you with sickness and disease. What do you believe? You must resist Satan by rebuking him and his lies. And you must claim the promises and blessings of God in your life, in Jesus’ name.

What I am describing is not a “name it, claim it” doctrine. This is God’s doctrine of creation. And it requires three things.

  1. Know the truth of God’s will for you, which is in God’s Word. Not simply one verse out of context, but the truth of God’s Word. (John 8:31-32)
  2. Establish that truth through planting God’s Word in your heart, and watering it with faith, until you firmly believe it is true. (Romans 10:17)
  3. Take action and speak accordingly—from your heart, in faith. Establishing God’s will for you in place of Satan’s will. (Mark 11:23-24)

A study tells us that the average person speaks 40,000 to 50,000 things to him or her self every day, and 70% or more of that is negative. However, the same study revealed that exceptional, professional, athletes reduce their self-talk to 20,000 or less statements per day. And only 50% is negative.

Focused thinking and self-talk, that agree with God’s will for you, are critical if you are to move from victimization to victory. Why? Because “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17). Your belief system is not only built on what you say out loud. It is also based on what you believe and say to yourself in your mind!

What I’m describing is “heart talk”. If TV commercials and other forms of repetitive advertisement weren’t effective in selling products, no one would pay to air them. Ask yourself, “What am I continually advertising and selling to my subconscious mind (my inner person) via heart-talk?”

Your subconscious has no power of judgment; it simply records data and experiences as they happen and then believes as true what it’s told. Satan is called an evil genius. He has designed a negative marketing campaign to try to sell you on your personal failures, trying to get you to submit to his negative reports. But don’t believe him. Don’t repeat his condemnations in your mind or let them into your heart. The only way to reject Satan temptations is to plant God’s Word in your heart. The only way to have faith, is knowing what God has said about you.

That’s why the words of your mouth (what you say to others), the meditations of your heart (what you say to yourself), and the words of others (whom you listen to)—whether positive or negative—greatly determine what you think and believe. Furthermore, what you think strongly affects what you do, and who you’ll eventually become. Your heart-talk should always be acceptable in God’s sight. This requires a major effort. But it is the way to make changes in your health, relationships, provision, happiness, and overall success in your Christian life.

With the type of future that is coming quickly to this world, Godly heart-talk has never been more important. Trust me on that. Satan’s deceptions are growing in magnitude and number. It is only going to become more difficult in the days ahead. The Bible describes a powerful deluding influence that’s coming to deceive all who are vulnerable. Even some of God’s people will believe the lies because they have not learned to judge and control what they think.

We have each been given the job of being the gatekeeper of our mind and heart. No one else can do that for us. We must determine what we’ll allow ourselves to see, to hear and to think. You must learn what God’s Word says if you intend to challenge and capture any thought contrary to His will. Then you must bring your thoughts into line with truth.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:4-5.

The evil in our world has been well hidden—under the surface—until recently. Not so any longer. Evil is being uncovered and is so rampant that ‘right looks wrong’ and ‘wrong looks right’. These days were prophesied about long ago.

Listen carefully to my battle cry. God holds you and I personally accountable for the temple He’s given us to care for. He will not usurp our stewardship. We must avoid negative influences, and companions, and activities. Filter, and even eliminate, the movies and media you see, the music you listen to, the magazines and books you read, the news you watch and listen to. God has called His people to renew their minds with His Word, to separate themselves from this fallen world and pursue righteousness. If we will do that, we will not be nearly as vulnerable to deception.

If your perspective on life is miserable, your future will be miserable—unless you make a change. Heart-talk can change your attitude. Heart-talk can change your perspective. Heart-talk can change your future. How do you do it? By speaking God’s promises. By meditating on His word. By spending more time with God and His Word than you do listening to the lies of this world. Let’s look at a powerful promise.

Proverbs 3:5-10 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones. Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the first fruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.”

Two thousand years ago, Jesus took away Satan’s power at Calvary, disarming him completely. The devil can only hurt you now if you agree with him. Jesus called Satan the ‘father of lies’. You must not allow his lies to be embed in your heart.

As a believer in Jesus, you are God’s child. Jesus lives in you. Satan can lie to you, but he doesn’t have authority over you… unless you decide to believe him. The Bible says, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). How do you resist? By believing what is true and establishing your faith in that truth, so that you can speak and act in agreement with it.

I must clarify one important truth: God loves you just as you are. He loves you when you do right and when you do wrong; sin doesn’t affect His love for you. I’m not recommending sin, as it breaks our fellowship with God. You may grieve His heart through your choices, but you can never escape His love. Know that His love is truly unconditional—He loves you under every condition of life. But to maintain fellowship with Him, we must repent of sin and submit to His lordship in our life. And to experience the blessings He paid for us to enjoy, we must acquire them His way.

Out of His love for you, He gave you the power of choice and creation. It’s about you honoring God through a life that reflects His gift of choice—your choice to come into agreement with the way He created you—using the power of creation that He designed in you to reflect His life in a fallen world.

“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;” Deuteronomy 30:19.

Whatever God is asking you to do or not do, is worth it. You can be victorious.

With God, nothing is impossible!
