What’s your stance on spiritual warfare? Do you believe it’s real? Is it something that others do and but you don’t participate in?
Many churches never teach about “how spiritual warfare works”. Or if it is even necessary for the average Christian to learn about, or to participate in. Some think the concept of fighting demons in the spiritual realm is just carrying things too far.
Due to the lack of biblical teaching, we generally tend to see our problems and struggles in non-spiritual terms. And because of that, we tend to seek non-spiritual solutions. Like the shot for a virus. Like psychological counseling for mental health issues. Like pharmaceuticals for suppression of symptoms from a physical problem. But we don’t deal with the root… which is spiritual.
This puts us at a crossroad where we need to choose… decide… do we really believe what the Bible teaches? What Jesus demonstrated? Or do we set that aside for a more world-friending, socially acceptable approach? Let’s face it, the church people who call themselves Christian, for the most part, have no problem with taking pharmaceuticals or seeking help from a psychologist. But they might cringe if you start talking about spiritual warfare or rebuking demons.
However, as a true Christian (not simply in name or social grouping), the Word of God MUST be our guide. Everything that occurs in the visible, physical world is directly connected to the battle being waged in the invisible, spiritual realm. If you struggle to believe that is true, you may want to spend more time reading the Bible. We love to believe in Heaven, but in many instances, struggle to believe in hell and demons. And if we do believe they exist, we prefer to keep our distance rather than engage.
The Bible is clear, we are in a great spiritual struggle whether we believe it or not. And as a born-again believer in Jesus, the scripture teaches us that sin (in all its forms) loses power over us because Jesus defeated Satan when He rose from the grave. Jesus stripped Satan of the keys to the kingdom.
“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” Colossians 2:15.
That doesn’t mean sin doesn’t any longer exist. Or that it loses its ability to tempt us (through the work of demons). But it does mean we’ve inherited superior authority in Jesus to defeat ANY sin. If…. we’ll use that authority through spiritual warfare.
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth” Matthew 28:18.
Jesus never lost His authority over Satan. But what He did on the cross was to pay for you and me to have access to that authority through a saving relationship with Jesus. Not simply believing in Jesus–Satan and every demon believes in Jesus. But those who sincerely repent of sin and accept the shed blood of Jesus as the price paid to cover our sin are accepted into God’s family. Once we enter God’s family through our trust in Jesus and the price He paid, we have inherited precious promises from God and spiritual authority over our enemy.
Until we enter Heaven for eternity, we still live in a fallen world run by Satan. The effects of the war going on in the unseen world reveal themselves in this fallen world through our strained and damaged relationships, emotional instability, mental fatigue, physical exhaustion, sickness or disease, and many other issues of life. Many of us feel pinned down by anger, unforgiveness, pride, betrayal, comparisons, insecurity. And in these current days especially, we are tempted to be troubled and fearful. The list goes on and on. But the overarching, primary nemesis behind all these symptoms of unease is the Devil himself.
Jesus explained Satan’s agenda, as well as what we have available through Jesus, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” John 10:10.
Did you catch that? Our biggest problems are actually spiritually rooted. Ephesians 6:12 says the same: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.“ “Heavenly places” refers to the world’s atmosphere–the area of Satan’s domain. It is also the area in which we live or co-exist with demonic forces.
Satan established his kingdom in the earth centuries ago and the demons he rules occupy the area around the earth. Satan’s greatest nemesis are true Christians who understand the spiritual authority they have been given. They are the ONLY ones who can damage Satan’s kingdom, pull down the strongholds he has put in place and reverse the work he and his demon hordes have accomplished. True Christians are an elite and powerful group that God uses to establish His kingdom and accomplish His will in the midst of an evil kingdom.
Are you one of those elite warrior Christians? Someone who accepts the responsibility that Jesus gave His followers… so that they can overcome? You might ask, “overcome what or who?” Overcome Satan, his demons and the consequences that Satan’s efforts have establish in your life and in the world around you. If you have a life that is not an abundant life, then Satan has put up strongholds that you have the authority to pull down using spiritual warfare.
“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you” Luke 10:19.

Yes, Sister Sharon, Paula has given us the tools to be triumphant over the enemy’s lies. God bless you and meet your needs.-LR Prayer Coordinator
Thank you Paula for this well written article. As you point out, this message needs to be fresh on the minds of not only Pastors but all believers. In the area where we live, firemen are required to go through their entire firefighting protocol once a year. In the same way, no less, review and repetition would be of utmost importance to believers who are in an ongoing combat with the forces of darkness.
Yes, Brother Eric, we must be reminded of God’s Word daily in repetition to come against the enemy’s tactics. Greater is He who is in us, than He who is in the world…1John 4:4 God continue to bless you! -LR Prayer Coordinator
