A familiar American song of 1964 tells us that silence is golden but I’m here to tell you there are times in the life of a Christian where silence is NOT golden, but irresponsible. And at times it is lethal. Being quiet when God has commanded His children to speak up is defiance towards God. Not only that, but sometimes silence is cowardly and unloving toward others. Jesus said that it is the truth that set us free… not awkward and gutless silence.
Too often people use criticism and correction as a way to speak up. That’s seldom what God instructs us to do. There are occasions, but we must ALWAYS make certain that what we are saying is done out of the motivation of love not condemnation.
I’m very aware that speaking up when God says to speak may cost you. It may cost you relationships, a career, even your life. But I refer you to history. Look at Bible history, the history of mankind, the history of the children of Israel and you’ll see that silence by the ‘righteous’ is completely lethal.
Before WWII broke out in Europe, there was a large Christian population in Germany who could have stopped the Nazi regime from taking power had they united and spoken up for what is right. Their silence went on too long. By the time a small number DID SPEAK OUT, it cost those few their lives.
Prolonged silence by the righteous ushered into power the largest destructive forces in human history, taking between 50 and 70 million lives in total. These number are barely conceivable… even today.
Jeremiah 26:2 “…all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word.” Now in this scripture God is speaking to a prophet, but the principle is true for His children, believe me. Listen to what God is saying to His people today. “Stand in the court of the Lord’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the Lord’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Do not diminish a word.” Is He speaking to you through that scripture?
Before I go on, let me speak directly to pastors… It’s time to stop worrying about your church numbers, your attendance, your giving, your salaries and your clout. Pastors and Christian leaders, we have a clear-cut responsibility to warn the people. They are not YOUR people, they are God’s people and He has placed you in a position of leadership… as His mouthpiece. Worry not, pastors, God will take care for you. But He is asking you to warn the people.
The scripture goes on to say, “Perhaps everyone will listen and turn from his evil way, that I may relent concerning the calamity which I purpose to bring on them because of the evil of their doings.”
May the days of political correctness, compromise and wimpy bible teaching—trying to make everyone will feel comfortable—be put behind us. Rise up and speak up. Gain back your self-respect… and more importantly, be fully obedient to our Lord.
Silence can be lethal. Courage is what it takes. Courage to stand up and speak up. Speak not about the wrong in this world. But speak up for what God says is right. We are in days of much evil. This world is racing toward the end days and the emergence of the Antichrist. His spirit is already at work in the world.
Now listen to what I am not saying. I am not saying to create arguments with evil people. People that hate Christians and Jews are angry and loud. They are against you … because they are against God. But how should you and I respond? Jesus said, “do not resist an evil person.” Matt. 5:39. Don’t resist evil, but stand up for the right. Speak up and stand up for what is right. That’s so important—you need to hear it again. Don’t resist evil, but stand up for what’s right!
We now live in a global culture where Christians are being persecuted openly. They’re being dragged to jail or flogged, murdered and even beheaded. If you don’t think it can come to your country or your neighborhood, you are kidding yourself. It is coming. But we can hold back the evil. Easily in fact. But we must … take courage and speak up. Rise up and speak up for what is right. Gain your self-respect and stand up for what is right. Remember… Heaven is watching.
