These days “racism” is a topic we hear on the news or read in media but what does the Bible say about it? As Christians we recognize that racism is something Satan is using to bring division. And as expected, it is rooted in great deception and worldly thinking.
The differences between groups of people by color, culture, or area of origin, is in truth an expression of God’s creativity. All beautiful, all unique and each exhibiting distinctive attributes.
I will never forget the image Dale described of his welcoming committee when he visited Heaven after being the only survivor of an airplane crash. The group of precious people who greeted him—his spiritual family—he described as being from of every ethnic group and of various skin tones. Yet in Heaven all that Dale knew was that every person was equally perfect and precious in God’s eyes. Each one exuded love and unity and reflected the beauty and creativity of God.
Interestingly, according to studies most biologists and anthropologist don’t recognize “race” as a biologically valid class. The reasons stated are because there are more genetic variations within racial groups than there are between them.
Isn’t it interesting that when you visit a blood donor facility, race is not an issue? After a quick search regarding blood transfusions and what blood types can be mixed together, nothing is written about ethnic groups or race. Blood can be mixed by “blood type” but it doesn’t matter at all what ethnic group that person belongs to. This is significant. Don’t you agree? There is one race–the human race.
According to Jehovah God there is only one race—the human race. According to the Bible you are God’s creation. You and I are of the human race. Not only that, but if Jesus is Lord over our lives–we have His love flowing in our veins. Let me challenge you to allow His love flow to you and then through you out to others so that we can do our part to stop racial upheaval and prejudice when we encounter it.
What this world has classified as various races (i.e. American Indian, Asian, Black, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, White and so forth), are not different races anyway–scientifically speaking. Rather, they are different ethnic groups of the human race. All human beings have the same physical characteristics (with minor variations, of course). More importantly, all human beings are equally created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27). God loved the world (which includes all ethnic groups) so much that He sent Jesus to lay down His life for all (John 3:16). His blood was shed for the forgiveness of sin for the Human Race.
From God’s perspective (which should be our perspective) there are two types of people on the face of this earth. There are those who have chosen to serve and follow Jesus, are born-again, and part of God’s family. Then there are those who are not born-again but lost spiritually and therefore, children of Satan’s family by default. Which family are you part of? If God’s, then you are no longer of an earthly heritage but of God’s family. Our earthly father is now Abraham and our spiritual father is Jehovah God.
In the Bible Paul was dealing with prejudice between Jew and Gentile. Prejudice is simply another form of racism. Paul powerfully describes what happens when we are born-again. There is no longer Jew or Gentile and no other race or heritage matters more than our spiritual and eternal bloodline. In Romans 11:17-20 it describes this issue.
“And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith.”
When we belong to God, we must recognize that though we are from a natural family and an earthly group of people, our new allegiance and true heritage in now the family and lineage that God established for us.
Before we are born-again the world’s perspective is our default. Once we are spiritually reborn, in every area of life we are called to renew the way we think. This takes focused, consistent effort. But God is calling us to think the way He thinks. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2.
This scripture tells us that it is simply not possible to prove or manifest what is good and acceptable to God without first renewing our mind to think like Him.
In summary, this email is not about how to maneuver through the dilemma of “racism” with the world’s perspective. There are hundreds of articles written about how to do that from a worldly or religious perspective. And although some offer practical suggestions… if those suggestions do not address the root issue, they provide no permanent solution.
God is always more concerned about our spiritual growth than solving this fallen world’s issues—which will always remain in one form or another as long as Satan rules.
Dale and I encourage you to focus on God’s kingdom in you. Start with renewing your mind. Think about this issue like God does. There is no racism in God’s kingdom. If you are a true Christian… your position should be to love even when others don’t return it. And pray for those who are being driven by our enemy even if they persecute you—because they are looking through carnal eyes while we must look through spiritual eyes.
To love someone is to see them as God intended. Let us believers treat others using the Love of Jesus in our daily lives and put an end to racism at its core.
Remember, With God nothing is impossible.
