Make Yourself Hungry for God – Capt Dale Black

How does a person become hungry for God? It’s actually quite easy. In a word – practice. Through practice, a person will create a desire for that which he/she is doing regularly. Let’s talk about a sport that I enjoy… golf. (It still amazes me, and most who know my situation, that I can actually play golf. With 60% of my left shoulder muscles and ligaments removed, with 5 screws now holding the left ankle in place and continual lower back pain from the crash, just swinging a club is miraculous. Sure, I have left over issues, but I can actually play golf and I credit the work of the good Lord.

Think of it. No one is born with a love for golf. But as a person plays the game, again and again, trying to improve their score, a desire or demand begins to grow. Here’s the rule of thumb: whatever you repeatedly put your attention to…you will create a demand for. This is even true in our relationship with God. If we give Him more attention, spend more quality time with Him and in His word, a hunger for God grows. Years ago I heard a preacher, I don’t remember who, say, “If you’re not hungry for God, it because you’re full of yourself.”

Right now are you like more and more people who write to Paula and I, hungry for God… more than you’ve been in years? Maybe more than ever in your life? Are you hungry to know Him better? Ready for a greater manifestation of His presence? Are you ready for Jesus to be fully formed in you? 

If so, you are NOT alone in that desire. Far from it. From all over the world, we are seeing and hearing from believers who are desiring more of God than ever before. I am meeting and hearing from Christians whose hearts are crying out to be changed and filled in a greater degree with the glory of God. Those who answer “yes” to the above questions, I would call you the “faithful Church.”

A sense of urgency has obviously been implanted in the spirits of the ‘FAITHFUL’ by the Spirit of God because the end of this age is near. Time is running out, and God is fulfilling His plan in us. He is preparing for Himself a glorious Church without spot or wrinkle. He is raising up a people who will do the things He has prepared for them. Jesus is coming back for a bride, pure and ready for the Bridegroom. 

God is bringing forth a multitude of believers who will fulfill the divine destiny prepared for them since the beginning of time. That destiny is defined clearly in Romans 8:29: “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” (NKJV).

Our destiny as believers is to develop and mature. In other words, to grow up in Jesus. We are to be fully conformed to His image, which was placed within us the moment we became reborn.

It’s a staggering thought that you and I could actually be transformed into that divine image. It seems almost impossible that our lives could clearly reflect Jesus. But the Bible says we can. In fact, God’s Word says He has equipped us with everything necessary so that we might continue growing and developing.

Ephesians 4:13 says, “till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect (mature) man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” (NKJV).

Keep in mind that the Spirit of God wrote those words by inspiration! Therefore, as amazing as it seems, we can (and should) believe that He has the ability to so completely conform us to the likeness of Jesus. And “…to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God!” (Ephesians 3:19, NKJV).

Create a demand in yourself by giving your attention to time with God alone… in prayer and reading and mediating on His Word. Stay focused on God’s promises. His Word is true. God is faithful and He loves you without conditions. Of course, remember, with God nothing is impossible.
