Welcome to 2023! God’s Word is a powerful force for bringing God’s will into your life in this new year. However, if you don’t act in agreement with God’s ways, you are left frustrated and wondering “Why God’s Word isn’t working?”

There is a difference between believing God’s Word… and activating it in your life. Even Satan believes that Jesus is God’s Son and the long-awaited Messiah. Believing is good but we can’t stop there. We must put that belief into action through our confession and our behavior. God says so. Look at this scripture, which shows us the two aspects of handling God’s word.

“But what does it say? ‘The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart’ (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:8-10.

As modern-day Christians we have become lazy in handling the Word of God—much like ignoring the fine print of a contract and “hoping for the best.” But God gave us instruction that believing is only half of the story. Confessing what we believe activates the Word in our life.

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth 2 Timothy 2:15.

When God created us in His image… with the ability to choose what we believe… as well as the ability to speak His Word in faith, He gave us access to authority and power.

Making a choice to believe what God has said brings us into alignment with God’s will. However, then we must stick our neck out and confess, what and who, we believe. Only then is the power of God’s Word released into our life to accomplish what it was designed to do.

Jesus is the Living Word. If we ignore God’s Word or mishandle it, we are ignoring and mishandling Jesus. If we believe and confess Him as our Savior, as mentioned in the above Scripture, we are saved. Likewise, if we confess Him, He will confess us before His Father who is in heaven.

Think about the thief on the cross next to Jesus when Jesus was crucified. The thief considered Jesus and chose to believe He was the Messiah. He did not stop there… but spoke words in agreement with what he believed. “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” Luke 23:42.

Through the thief’s belief and confession, the truth that Jesus was the Messiah was activated to provide salvation for him. “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 10:32-33.

Sometimes we forget that silence is denial. When we see the promises of God and do not take ownership of those precious promises, we leave them powerless to accomplish what they were provided to offer.

God’s Word is full of revelation and promises for those who believe. But until we take ownership of the truth of God’s Word in our own life through our confession, it remains inactive in our behalf.

God takes the words we speak very seriously. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21

They have eternal and spiritual power for, or against us. Jesus created the worlds and everything that exists, through the spoken word. And we are created in His image. Our words also create. That is likely why Jesus said the following:

“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:36-37.

When given such a powerful spiritual tool, God holds us accountable for how we use it. As we begin a new year, I encourage you to decide to guard your words. Take what you say seriously. Believe God’s Word and activate it with your faith in action, through your confession. You have access to one of the most powerful weapons, benefits and blessings that exist: Your words.

With God nothing is impossible!
