As Spring arrives and I begin planting seeds in the ground in hope of fresh produce, the powerful principle that Jesus taught, springs up in my heart. The reason I get so excited about seed planting is the realization of how powerful and effective this principle is in the spiritual realm. God gave us a perfect example of this kingdom principle through the example of a farmer planting a seed.

The seed is an amazing creation of God. An heirloom seed, unchanged by mankind, has supernatural created life within it. It can sit on the shelf for years as a seed. But as soon as it is planted in the earth and watered… watch out. It springs to life and releases the plant has been lying dormant inside the seed, just waiting for someone’s faith to release it.

In Mark 4:13 Jesus describes the seed parable, and in explaining it to his disciples privately, “He said to them, ‘Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?’” It’s interesting that Jesus is saying, that if this foundational parable of seed planting is not understood, then how can they understand any of the other parables?

In the next verse, Jesus makes a powerful and principled statement: “The sower sows the Word.” (Mark 4:14). In verse 9 Jesus says, “He who has ears to hear, let him be hearing [and let him consider, and comprehend]” (Mark 4:9 AMP).

Jesus went on to say, “The Word is the seed.” God’s Word is the seed of supernatural blessing. Until a person seeking healing, provision, protection, or anything that is God’s will… he must plant that seed of God’s Word in his heart. Otherwise, he is trying to reap a harvest where there is no seed planted. And the seed must be for they type of harvest the sower desires.

It would be impossible for a farmer to have faith for a harvest of wheat before he was sure that wheat seed had been planted into the ground. In this spiritual example, Jesus is describing the ground as the “heart.” To be concise: in this parable, a farmer’s seed in the dirt = God’s Word in the heart of a person.

As you read the full passage, which I highly recommend, you see the various types of soil—or heart—that the seed is planted in and which type of heart is good soil and which is not (Mark 4 and Matthew 13). If the heart is not “good soil” then the seed will not grow.

It is not God’s will that there is a harvest without the planting of the seed—without His will being known and acted on. This is the way the kingdom of heaven operates in the earth through the people of God. There is no other way to receive a harvest of answered prayer without this spiritual process.

I remember experiencing the power of this principle when I was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I planted the seed of God’s word for healing and meditated on it daily (even hourly). Dale experienced the power of this principle when he was told he would never see out of his right eye or use his left arm or walk again. God’s Word clearly revealed God’s will of healing and restoration to Dale, and he planted it in his heart (against everyone’s opinion and prognosis). But that was not enough.

It started as seed on the shelf (God’s Word in Scripture) that had to be planted (into a heart), watered before it could sprout. Then it had to be kept and nourished in the heart while it grew and matured.

Often the breakdown happens after people plant the word but do not see manifestation of the seed as quickly as they want to or think they should. They tell themselves, “Well, this doesn’t work.” And they give up watering the seed, meditating on the seed, and let go of their faith for the harvest.

Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Freedom from sickness, or anything that is contrary to God’s will, comes from knowing the truth. Not hoping for or desiring… But KNOWING, because it is clearly revealed in God’s Word. God does nothing without His Word. “He sent His Word and healed them,” are the words of the Holy Spirit in Psalm 107:20. All God’s work is accomplished through a person’s faithfulness to His promise.

It is necessary that the seed is planted in the mind (soul), and heart (spirit), and continually watered (faith). And it cannot be planted in the first place until it is known, received, believed, and trusted.

No sinner can become a Christian before he knows that it is God’s will to save him. It is the Word of God, planted and watered and steadfastly trusted, both soul and body, which brings and maintains, the answer to your faith.

As we refuse to be affected by temporal circumstances to the contrary, God always fulfills His promises when He can get the right cooperation.

If you’ve not received an answer to your prayers and you have given up believing. Consider starting again today by planting the powerful seeds of God’s Word in your heart for what you need. Water them daily with your faith, knowing they are working and growing in the invisible realm, ultimately to manifest in the natural realm, in your behalf. (Mark 11:24).

With God nothing is impossible!
