There was an event that occurred in my life years ago when I was engaged in a great struggle in my life. I was emotionally overwhelmed and wondering how God was going to help me get through it. I loved the Lord and wanted to follow the path He had for me. But at the same time, I wanted to be rescued. And I wanted my problem to be solved. My impatience to have the ordeal behind me was driving me to make decisions with my natural mind instead of waiting on the Lord for His answer.

Emotions are in the soulish realm along with our natural mind (intellect) and will (choice). Our soul (mind, will and emotions) is the throne room of the flesh. It is what leads if the spirit is not in charge and that can be dangerous.

Of course I prayed, I went to church, I worshipped. But my problem was overwhelming and seemingly without a solution. And God was silent. Then one day–a day I will never forget–I was standing alone at home inside the front door, and I heard a voice. Not just any voice, but God’s voice.

You may or may not have experienced God’s audible voice before. But when you hear it, there in no question who is speaking. Every syllable was clear. The tone was clear. And the words were full of love… “Are you going to go My way? …Or your way?

It was an unexpected question. A simple one. But as always when God speaks, understanding comes with the words. In general terms, I thought I was going God’s way. But His words brought conviction that I was going my own way and asking Him to come along. How often do we slip into taking charge? Sometimes we feel like God just doesn’t move fast enough. And in the void of not having clarity, we make our own choices.

Unfortunately, often what we believe is a good choice is a disastrous one. There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death (or destruction).” Proverbs 14:12.

Part of the problem was that I didn’t know how to go God’s way. If I went His way, how would I have the understanding, or strength, or desire to do it? It all felt impossible.

Fortunately God wasn’t done speaking. But before I share more with you, consider the following scriptures.

Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord! Psalm 27:14. Waiting is a very difficult thing to do. Waiting does not mean empty time or space. It communicates leaning in and taking the time and effort to seek God. It also assumes we are choosing to wait on taking action UNTIL the Lord reveals His wisdom on how to deal with what we are facing.

There are many scriptures that speak of “waiting on the Lord.” In this particular verse the word wait describes waiting in faith. Don’t get me wrong… there will ALWAYS be action to take. Faith without works is dead (non-operative). But how can we take action in faith if we are not confident in God’s will regarding the challenge or trial we are facing? Real faith is always based upon confidence in God’s will and Word. And God’s will always benefits us far more than any decision we could make on our own with our natural mind.

Isaiah 40:31 is probably one of the best known scriptures regarding waiting. But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”

Isn’t it interesting that both of these scriptures, as well as many others, tell us that the act of waiting allows God to renew and strengthen us. We make the decision to wait, seek God’s presence and wisdom, and He responds by strengthening us so that we are able to accomplish His will, His way. I have learned that God never asks us to do something that He doesn’t equip us to do.

Getting back to my story… the next words I heard, were in direct response to my mind and emotions reacting to God’s first question. When He first spoke, I immediately thought, “I don’t know how to emotionally go Your way.” I was surprised to realize that I immediately knew what direction His way was. I just could not imagine having the emotional strength and ability to obey what He was asking me to do.

In reality I had fooled myself. I thought that going God’s way was asking too much of me so I had excused myself. I literally did not know how to handle obeying Him. But He knew what I needed and His next words gave me clear direction. “Just put your hand in Mine. And keep your eyes on Me (look in my face only). And I will lead you out of this maze.”  It had felt like I was in a maze. The walls were too high to see over and I had lost all perspective.

God knew exactly what was needed. And that’s exactly what he said to me 40 years ago. God’s words never fade. They never diminish over time. They are as clear today as when He spoke them. I remember every syllable and how He said them with great love and concern for me… and encouragement for me to trust Him.

I did trust Him. I didn’t understand how He would do it, but I trusted that He would. And He did. I trusted Him and obeyed step by step to eventually emerge from the maze into sunshine again.

As the world becomes more uncertain and life more confusing, it is more important than ever that we trust the Lord and wait on Him to gain the strength and wisdom we need to overcome.

We are entering a time of deception like never before. It is already happening that Satan is deceiving so many–even many of those who claim Jesus as Savior. Our outcome is not guaranteed until we enter eternity. Satan is prowling around like a roaring Lion. Making noise and scaring any who can be moved.

If we want to end our race victoriously and spend eternity in Heaven with the Lord, we must finish our race successfully. Satan will pick off any low hanging fruit. If we are not cleaving to Jesus, we will be that low hanging fruit.

In Matthew 24:13 Jesus warns us, “But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” There is no way to persevere or endure to the end without choosing at every opportunity to trust in the Lord, seek His wisdom and obey His leading. I pray you will make that choice today, tomorrow and until the Lord returns to take us home.

With God nothing is impossible!
