According to the promises of God, there is a powerful principle available to God’s people. If you’ll use your trials to develop patience, the way God means it, you’re going to be precisely in the correct position to experience His blessings.
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” James 1:2-3.
You see, patience doesn’t mean what most believers think is means. It doesn’t mean settling for second best. It does not mean standing meekly by while Satan walks all over you. Not at all.
Patience is a word of strength and power. It is all about endurance. The New Testament meaning, as translated literally from the Greek, is “to be consistently constant or to be the same way all the time, regardless of what happens.” This is not the typical reaction from most people. But it should be standard operating procedure for God’s people. The person who exercises Godly patience displays God’s strength on this earth.
To understand how much power is involved in this kind of patience, we need to realize that this quality is one of the most outstanding attributes of God Himself. The Bible describes God as the same yesterday, today and forever.
Think about the world in which we live today: Social distancing, Lockdowns, Lockdowns removed, Vaccines good, Vaccines bad. Government good today and bad tomorrow, or the other way around. Watch almost any news source and each day is filled with instability, illogical conclusions, wrong information mixed with a little truth. And now think again about a Christian who absolutely cannot be changed by anyone or anything. This is an extremely powerful person, one whom God is likely to work through and bless abundantly.
Tim Breuninger, a DBM partner and co-minister, displayed these qualities yet once again in his personal life. Tim retired from his career working for the City of San Diego as a highly educated Agricultural Specialist and chose not to be idle. He trained and became a part-time bus driver who uses his position to interact and share the love of God with the lost and needy. He does this, not because he has to work, he does this because it is an avenue he choses to use to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Tim was recently called into the the main office at work and was told he would be let go by the end of the week because he had–gently buy firmly–declined to take the Covid-19 shot. Tim’s response to the administrator was, “Sir, you gave me this job of your own free will and now you have asked me to leave by the end of the week. Of my own free will, I will resign, as you have asked. You will have no trouble from me and my positive attitude and professionalism will continue right up to the last hour of the last day. Please know that I will serve you and our customers on my last day just as I did on my first day. Thank you, sir, for the opportunity of working here.”
Tim and I talked at length on the phone and then prayed together. After I hung up, I got misty-eyed thinking of Tim’s attitude toward God and the integrity he displayed. And this isn’t Tim’s first time of facing trials. Oh no. And in each test and trial Tim has learned how to respond with grace and strength–being unmoved by circumstances. In short, Tim uses the attribute of patience from God.
What a great example of God’s anointing through His servant Tim Breuninger!
Three days after Tim’s last day of as a part-time professional bus driver and minister of the Lord Jesus, Tim was approached by another organization and asked if he’d be interested in driving for this new firm. He agreed and Tim’s bus ministry to the lost and needy continues with love and vigor. And the gospel of Jesus goes forward still.
But you know what? You can do what Tim has done many times. You too can develop the patience of God! God honors those who honor Him.
By the power of the Holy Spirit working inside you, you can be the same every day no matter what happens. If you’ll keep your trust in the Word of God and let patience do its work, it won’t matter much at all what happens around you. You won’t have to accept second best.
Now that’s something to be enthusiastic about. And remember, whatever trials come your way, with God nothing is impossible.
