Discerning TRUTH in a World of Deception – Capt. Dale Black

It seems obvious to me that there has never been a time in all of history, both outside the church and inside, where truth is in such short supply and is needed by so many! There are a myriad of deceptions all around. This has always been the case outside the church. But inside? It appears that as a body we are traveling into uncharted territory.

So, may I ask? Are you firmly rooted in God’s word? Are you confident in your ability to discern deception? If not, it’s time to spend more time in your Bible and in fellowship with the Lord. The days are growing spiritually darker and it is more important than ever to prepare ourselves for what is ahead.

From where do you get your spiritual food? Who are you listening to? Is your belief a dogma, a doctrine or the truth? Both doctrine and dogma can be the truth, but both can also be in error. But truth is unchanging. The truth is always truth – it cannot be in error.

“For there shall arise false Christ’s and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”  Matthew 24:24

The Bible tells us that there is a time coming that will be so confusing and full of deception that even those who are God’s own, may fall for the lies. This is already happening on a colossal scale.

Let’s look into these three types of belief: doctrine, dogma and truth.

Doctrine is defined as: Teachings and beliefs relating to a particular subject. Like the Christian doctrine of salvation through Jesus, the virgin birth, the resurrection, etc.

In 2 Timothy 4:3 it says, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound doctrine, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.” The Bible says these people will be susceptible to deception. This is happening all across this planet as I write this letter to you.

2 Timothy 3:16 states, “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” God’s word is to be trusted and counted on as the guiding line for every belief.

Dogma is defined as: Prescribed teachings and beliefs proclaimed as unquestionably true by a particular group. This can also apply to the solid biblical doctrines just mentioned, and can also be used to define a false belief that one feels adamantly strong about, but that is not rooted in truth. This is what often happens within cults like the so-called Church of Scientology. It is a belief system that is insisted upon. Dogma is similar to doctrine but inflexible and stronger.

And then there is truth. The Bible tells us God’s Word is truth. In John 17:17 we read where Jesus is praying for His disciples. It says, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” Those who are rooted and grounded in the truth of God’s word will be secure and able to discern what is false and what is true.

Spend quality time in your Bible and in fellowship with the Lord so that you are confident in your ability to discern deception. Consider trying a “read through the Bible program” and stick with your plan. The days are growing spiritually darker and it is more important than ever to prepare ourselves for what is ahead. You can do it.

With God nothing is impossible.
