Death is a subject most do not want to talk about. But everyone knows it’s something we cannot avoid. Deep inside, we all know that death is the final doorway we pass through when leaving this earth. But there is a reason the Bible describes death for the believer the way it does.

“So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory” (1 Corinthians 15:54).

This promise of victory in death, is for the believer who walks through death’s door. It is up to us who are still waiting, to renew our thinking and grasp the reality of what our future holds. In the eternal picture… this life is only the beginning… a steppingstone into eternity.

What’s waiting for those who have placed their trust in Jesus as Savior, is far, far, greater and more substantial than anything to be compared to on earth or even dream of.

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

I learned firsthand about death and how quickly death is swallowed up in victory. I learned firsthand about the reality of heaven. There is a reason those who have experienced heaven, say they no longer fear death. It is obvious to me now. Death is only a doorway from one way of living to a more real and glorious life. Our life never ceases. It really is like the caterpillar becoming a butterfly. We step from this world into our true home in a single moment of time.

When I was 19, I faced death unexpectedly. It was Just after takeoff. The airplane I was in, along with two other pilots, expectantly and violently crashed into a concrete and marble seven-story-high mausoleum in the middle of a cemetery, which ironically had been erected in memory of famous and deceased aviators.

The report from the NTSB said we collided at an official impact speed of 135 miles per hour. On impact, our airplane shattered into thousands of pieces, sending all three of us slamming head-on into the solid building. We were then catapulted into a free fall, resulting in a bone-crushing impact with the ground seven stories below. Death was waiting.

For those of you who have read my book Flight To Heaven, you know the story—at least the highlights of it. Once my body died, I was more alive than I have ever been, or will ever be, until I am home once again.

Rising over the wreckage, I hovered about fifteen feet above the ground. Like a silent observer, I was trying to grasp my new reality. At first, I didn’t understand it.

“For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

As I think back to my reaction upon first seeing my body, I’m still amazed. It was highly disfigured and damaged, almost beyond recognition. And yet, surprisingly, in my new state, I felt no pain or stress. But my mind swirled with questions.

How could I be in two places at the same time—my body below, and the real me up here? It was this realization that changed everything. Instantly, I understood who I really was. Revelation filled my mind and penetrated my heart. Although the damaged body below was indeed mine, it wasn’t me. Clarity exploded. I’m not a body. I’m a spirit.

Only my physical body had been discarded. My body had been like my car, taking me where I wanted to go on earth. Helping me interface with a natural, 3-dimensional world. But now I was out of it, and it was no longer needed. I was very curious about everything around me, yet I felt no panic or worry.

Outside of my body, I began taking in the scene from an entirely new point of view. My perspective of this world, and indeed the earth and entire universe, had shifted dramatically and permanently. I experienced the reality of “death being swallowed up in victory.”

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21).

In my new book, Visiting Heaven: Revealing the Secrets of Life After Death, I share in much greater detail about what I experienced in death, the glories of my visit to heaven, about who God is, and the purpose of life on earth.

If we are not living life with eternity in view… if this world is more important to us than God and our heavenly life that awaits, we will misuse the time we have to prepare.

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:1-3).

With God, nothing is impossible!
