Use caution friends, because a subtle enemy works to derail you. Let’s first look at this Scripture. “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.”  – 1 Thessalonians 4:13 NKJV

Many of us have the perspective that grief and sorrow is simply a natural part of life. So much so that we haven’t even questioned it. But as Believers we are being told to have an eternal perspective about life and death. We are also being told not to be like the world and lose hope, which opens the door to allowing sorrow to run unchecked. In fact, if we’re honest, we’d have to admit there are times when we actually want to feel sad and sorry for ourselves.

I remember that it was a strong temptation to feel sorry for myself when I was told I’d never walk or fly again. Furthermore, I looked a little like Frankenstein’s son and, if that wasn’t enough, I had a horrible time with my memory. Paula was tempted in the same way when she was given only a few months to live with a serious cancer diagnosis. I’ve visited and prayed for hundreds of accident victims and the sick, and with all of that, I’ve learned that a positive attitude is the best indicator that the patient is going to have the best results for recovery.

Why would we choose to feel sorrow? I think its because sorrow has an emotional kick to it. It offers a surge of feeling that, in the beginning stages is almost intoxicating. I’ve experienced it.

But grief and sorrow are dangerous things. Especially for believers in Jesus. Many years ago God showed me first hand how these emotions are not as innocent as we may think they are. The forces behind these emotions are actually spirit beings which have been sent by Satan to kill, steal and destroy. Grief and sorrow, if left unchecked can turn to depression and open a doorway for demonic empowerment.

These spirit beings are a part of the devastating, satanic barrage Jesus took on Himself when He was crucified on the cross (Isaiah 53). Jesus, the Messiah, bore grief and sorrow, so we wouldn’t have to. But remember, If they ever come knocking on your door, know that they are not innocent emotions. They are deadly enemies that Jesus has already taken away at the cross.

Start changing the way you think about sorrow and grief and recognize that too much of these emotions can be very dangerous. Choose not to live as those who have no hope. You’re a believer. You know that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again with victory over hell and death. That not only gives you hope where physical death is concerned, it gives you hope in every situation. And remember this too. God heals today. Healing is yours body, soul and spirit.
