Today the Lord has prompted me to write about the benefits of honoring the Lord. We come into a covenant partnership with the Lord when we accept His atonement for our sins and commit our lives to Him.
But what does the Word of God say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:8-10.
This Scripture shows an interactive relationship between us and God from the inception of our relationship. And it is our action (confession) that establishes His covenant in our lives.
God has already taken the first step. He sent Jesus to be our Savior, Redeemer and Lord. He gives us eternal life and we commit to live our life for Him. We are His and have been bought with a price.
“For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” 1 Corinthians 6:20.
Likewise, since we are in covenant relationship with Him, if we want to experience His provision in our lives–whether it be protection or finances or physical need… we must act in agreement with our covenant so that the Lord’s promises can manifest in our behalf.
God is gracious to instruct His people in order that they can walk in all of His benefits. One of them is found in the following verse.
“Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.” Proverbs 3:9-10.
This verse in Proverbs gives us a great principle of successful living on earth. Here it is in a nutshell: If you expect God to honor you and bless you in your earth life, you’ll need to honor Him first.
Back when Paula and I were first married, there were times we were slow to tithe. We were young and hadn’t yet learned the invaluable lesson recorded in Malachi 3–the blessings that come to the tither. ‘..And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground…”
We learned from experience in our early marriage that we were blessed more when we were consistent tithers. We made the decision that we would be consistent tithers no matter what. When we began honoring God more consistently with our increase–even with the ups and downs of recession, inflation, war and financial shifts–God helped us grow a business that in eight years took our breath away. To His glory, and our benefit, God blessed us.
Paula and I don’t live OFF the ministry. Keep that in mind when I write these things. We don’t gain personally by selling you a prosperity doctrine that works for the preacher and not so well for the donor. No, not at all. This is solid Bible Scripture (truth). . . and I have tested and tried this God-given principle and that is why I can testify to you. Give God your first fruits–which belong to God–and watch His faithfulness.
Some have said, “It’s so financially tight, that I just can’t afford to tithe right now.” Or, “With inflation and being on a fixed income, I have nothing left over to give to the Lord.”
I have to respond, God did not ask “for what’s left over.” He asked for the first ten percent of your income so that He COULD bless the 90 percent you still have. if you give to God first, in faith and obedience, He has promised that He will help the balance stretch and accomplish the things you NEED.
Remember the widow in Kings 17:10-16, who Elijah asked for water and bread? It’s interesting that at the time he made his request, Elijah told her not to be afraid. Certainly, it’s difficult to obey when we have so little. And fear of lack is always present. It’s another opportunity to trust in the Lord.
This widow had just enough flour and oil to make one more bread cake for her and her son and then she expected to die of starvation. But…the Bible recounts what happened instead. “She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.”
But what about inflation you ask? God knows all things. His principles work regardless of the economy. According to a recent survey from Pew Research Center, less than twenty percent of church going Christians admit to tithing. That’s less than 20 percent of professing Christians. Why would 80 percent of Christians ignore God’s word when it comes to giving Him the firstfruits of their increase?
If you’re not a consistent tither, let me challenge you. Take charge of your finances and choose to obey God’s Word. Give God the firstfruits of your increase. Even if it feels like you can’t afford to, God is faithful! If you’ll honor Him by giving Him the first ten percent, which already belongs to Him, He’ll help you and bless you with the 90 percent remaining.
I encourage you to give in faith and expectation–without being afraid. As you tithe, give with a grateful and joyful heart. “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.“ 2 Corinthians 9:7.
Remember, with God nothing is impossible!
Additional Scripture in Malachi 3:8-12
“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this, Says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field, says the Lord of hosts; “And all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land, says the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 3:8-12.
