Who doesn’t enjoy good fellowship? Like a conversation with someone who is on the same page you are. Someone who enjoys the same things you enjoy.

“Fellowship” is not the same as “relationship.” You can be in a relationship connection with someone, possibly even a blood relative, but that does not guarantee fellowship. Maybe you have nothing in common with that person or possibly you haven’t spoken to them enough to know what they think or like. That is acquaintance or relationship, not fellowship.

The word fellowship is derived from the Greek word koinonia. Koinonia can be defined as holding something in common. It is specifically used 20 times in the New Testament (e.g. Phil. 2:1-2, Acts 2:42, 1 John 1:6-7). Fellowship also implies that there is unity. We enjoy fellowship with those we are united with in belief and understanding.

When we read God’s Word, we realize that fellowship with other believers is something that is important to God. And fellowship with God, is of the utmost importance to being in God’s family.

It is easy to fellowship with those you love, isn’t it? And we are commanded to “love one another.” Consider these words of Jesus: “I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too are to love one another.” John 13:34 AMP.

The key to understanding this and other statements about love is to know that this type of love (the Greek word agape) is not so much a matter of emotion or feelings. It is dealing with things for the benefit of another person, that is, having an unselfish concern for another and a willingness to seek the best for another according to God’s will. When we read about loving one another, this is referring to other believers. The brethren or those of the household of God.

Why was this a new commandment from Jesus? Because the type of love Jesus was speaking about is a type of love that comes from God and is not possible without the redemptive work of Jesus in our lives. It is a God-kind of love that works in us and through us by His Spirit.

God isn’t only telling us to have fellowship with one another, but also with Him. Consider 1 John 1:3 AMP. “What we have seen and heard we also proclaim to you, so that you too may have fellowship [as partners] with us. And indeed our fellowship [which is a distinguishing mark of born-again believers] is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.”

John was saying that “THE distinguishing mark of true Christians, is the way we fellowship with God and with Jesus—which allows us to fellowship with other believers as partners in the faith.

I know many professing Christians who say they have a relationship with God but do not fellowship with Him. They may even say a prayer now and then, but that is not necessarily “fellowship”.

We are called to have fellowship with God. What might that look like? Spending time talking to Him and listening for His answer. Praying with understanding, and praying in the Spirit—allowing the Holy Spirit to pray God’s will through you. Reading the Bible and meditating on the meaning of what you read and considering how it impacts your life. Seeking understanding and knowledge about spiritual truths, while asking God to teach you. Discussing your life with God daily. And receiving His direction and input.

I talk to God throughout my day about almost everything. I invested time and focus in His Word and in other Christian books that expand my spiritual knowledge and understanding every day, asking God to teach me. He brings things to my mind to think about and consider. And I always do. Either to correct me, give me deeper understanding, or just for the enjoyment of fellowshipping together.

If you are a professing Christian, I urge you to spend time in fellowship with God as often as possible. He should be your very best friend. If that’s not the case, it’s not because He isn’t available or doesn’t desire to be involved in your life. It’s because you have not made fellowship with Him a priority. Please make it a priority every day going forward. It will become more enjoyable and easier the more you give time to it.

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

You may have a friend who you meet with for a cup of coffee a few times a year, or you may have a friend who you call several times a day to share your life with and they share theirs with you. Which of those friends know what is really going on in your life? Which of those friends are you most honest and transparent with?

God already knows all your secrets and all the dirty laundry in your life. But He desires that you talk to Him about those things, repent of the things you should, and talk to Him about the things that matter to you.

If you are born again, then you have given your life to Jesus Christ. He has bought you with the price of His blood. Once we are saved from this evil world, we are called as Christians to please God with the decisions we make and the way we live and use our life.

Fellowship is not only a sign of the reality of your personal relationship with God, it also brings great joy. Enjoy your relationship and fellowship with God. You are not only in His family through the blood of Jesus, but you also have access to a relationship that is more precious than any other relationship in this world.

He loves you and He’s waiting….

but if we [really] walk in the Light [that is, live each and every day in conformity with the precepts of God], as He Himself is in the Light, we have [true, unbroken] fellowship with one another [He with us, and we with Him], and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin [by erasing the stain of sin, keeping us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations].” 1 John 1:7.

With God nothing is impossible!

What Others are Saying:
“Great teaching Paula!! Oh how this form of instruction is needed from pulpits everywhere! (This is a Test!) Thank You!!” Eric
““This is a very good and timely article. I can’t agree more. Christianity is not a religion of convenience. It is time for all believers to take up our crosses and follow Him. Church is not for entertainment, but to learn the Truth. Christ said, ‘I am the Way the Truth and the Life’.” Lois
“Thank you so much! You have helped me and inspired me. You two are such precious souls in His kingdom. Your kindness is wonderful.” Cindy
