Being self-conscious is a major problem for a lot of believers. This has always been true but it’s even more so today. Self-consciousness often keeps us from doing the things God asks us to do because of our fear of what others may think. We have thoughts like, “What if I go to that person and actually tell them what I believe God is instructing me to say? What if I really do believe God’s promises for healing? What will people think of me if I do that? Should I really have faith for financial breakthrough, or for success in my business?” We might have other thoughts like, “God I can’t do that because if it doesn’t work out, it’s not going to look too good for You, right?”
If you’ve ever been through some of the things I’ve just described let me explain something. It doesn’t matter how you look! Obeying God is what counts. And when it comes to obeying God it’s important to note that your reputation can’t matter more than obedience. And the sooner you get over trying to hold onto your reputation the better off you will be. I speak from personal experience, believe me.
Here’s what seems to me to be quite ironic–once you surrender your reputation, it actually starts getting better. It’s kind of a crazy thing. When you give up your desire to protect your own image, what happens is that your image will actually improve. Not immediately. I’m not saying it’ll improve the next day or the next week but what I am saying is that it will get better over time. The reason why this happens is because when people look at the new you, instead of seeing a person with a puny self image, they’ll see an image of Jesus Christ coming through–and they will respect that.
Learning to listen to the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit, is a skill that every Christian should develop. God wants to build His kingdom on this earth through you and me. But we have to ask Him to give us an assignment and then we have to listen to His prompting when He has something for us to do. The more you “hear His voice” and “respond to His leading,” the more He will use you. There is nothing more fulfilling as a Christian than to see God do His work through our life.
Hebrews 13:5-6 says, “Let your conduct be without covetousness: be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we may boldly say: the Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
So put aside the old self-consciousness and start today to develop God consciousness instead. Let’s no longer be dominated by the fear of man’s opinion but let’s start being motivated by faith in what God can do through your life. After all, He has promised that He will never leave you or forsake you. So grab hold of that promise. Believe it and act upon it. And I believe that once you do you’re going to realize that there really is nothing to be afraid of anymore! So be who God wants you to be–not what others want to see.
With God nothing is impossible.
