If you are reading this message, you are likely born-again spiritually. Praise the Lord if that is true. But have you been “filled with the Holy Spirit? And do you walk daily in the Spirit of God? If you do not, then you are at risk of losing what you have.
We are living through unparalleled times. Times of great deception. Times prophesied about in the Bible as the days just prior to Christ’s return. A time when the spirit of antichrist will establish itself—and in fact already has established itself in the world’s society to dominate thinking, beliefs and actions.
We are in that time right now. And it will only grow stronger as the end draws nearer. This unholy spirit has been systematically infiltrating the churches of our day to mislead and cause confusion among those who would serve Christ.
We have pastors who lead the charge for social change more than they do for spiritual birth. How do we, mere mortals, resist and recognize such Satanic deception unless we are filled with the Holy Spirit and walking daily in the Spirit of Jesus Christ?
The Christian community is dwindling daily due to their lack of discernment of the evil agenda waged against them. It is an agenda of strategic evil designed to twist the meaning of scripture in order to confuse. As the faithful remnant of true believers grows smaller in the battle of the last days, it is more urgent than ever that any who truly desire to follow Jesus Christ into eternity, are doing so in the power and protection of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus made it abundantly clear how urgent it was that we receive the Holy Spirit. He left earth for the purpose of sending His Spirit to His followers so that anywhere on earth where His people live, He can reside in us, with us, guiding us and protecting us against the strategies of the devil.
Too often we focus only on the person of Jesus (our Savior) and disregard the Spirit of Jesus (our Guide, the One who equips us to overcome). His Spirit was sent to lead us safely throughout the fallen and evil world we live in. We need both—our Savior and His Holy Spirit if we want to reach the eternity of our heavenly home without failing short.
Ephesians 5:18 says to all Christians, “Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” This is a scripture so rich with meaning, we have to take our time to grasp the power that exists inside of it.
The verb “be filled” is famously a present tense verb which means to do it regularly, continually. Then it is also an imperative verb, which means that it is a command and not a suggestion. Last it is a passive verb, which means that while the command is given to us, God is the One who must “fill us. We put ourselves out there to be filled, but then we must trust Him in faith to fill us.
Why is it important to be filled with the Spirit? Filled continually? Filled by God Himself?
We need the Spirit’s HELP. A conviction essential for us to have as Christians is that we need help. The most important help God gives us is the Holy Spirit. In fact, the Spirit is called “the Helper” in John 14:26 “the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
We need His REVELATION. Apart from God’s Spirit we cannot know and comprehend spiritual things. Paul tells us that “no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:11).
This is one of the key reasons God gave to us His Spirit: “we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.” (vs. 12). We need God’s Spirit to understand His Word, His truth, and all things that pertain to Him.
We need God’s WISDOM. Life is so often about the gray and not the black and white, about the choice between two options, not necessarily between blatantly good and the evil options. We need God’s Spirit to give us wisdom for each moment. There are things we cannot see or identify beneath the surface. And yet God can and does. If He leads us and we follow, we can walk safely and without error. In this day of major deceptions it is more important than ever to receive God’s direction in every decision.
We need the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT. In Galatians 5:22-23 Paul lists many character traits, and he calls them “the fruit of the Spirit”: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” We need God’s Spirit to produce these character traits in our lives. Hard work and self-discipline will not ultimately produce the “love” we need, and the “joy” we desire. God must do that. Our efforts may put us into the position to receive His Spirit, but ultimately it is His Spirit that produces “fruit”.
We need His PURITY. The Spirit is called the Holy Spirit,” and this reminds us of what He will do in our lives, build the holiness which God demands. We are thus “being transformed into the same image of Christ from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:17-18. Holiness is not from man but from God. It is only when we continually remain in His presence that we experience holiness… being filled, and filled, and filled with the Holy Spirit.
Sometimes He transforms us gradually, but sometimes he does in a moment what we couldn’t do in 50 years of effort.
We need His POWER. In Galatians 3:1-3 Paul reminds us that we are to continue in the way we began the Christian Life. “Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?” Our Christian life began with the initial receiving of the Spirit at our new birth (Rom 8:9-11). Yet, we are to continue the Christian life through the power of the Spirit, not merely by our works and in our own strength: “Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?”
There is still more, for the Spirit desires even to work “miracles among you,” not by our “works of the law, but “by hearing with faith.” Paul’s point is faith in all aspects of the Christian life, but he is also reminding us that the power of the Spirit which saves us, is to continue throughout our Christian life, even to the extent that we see “miracles.” Let us never think that we get beyond our need for the power of God in our lives–a supernatural power that comes through the Holy Spirit.
We need His PRESENCE. Moses cried out to God, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.” (Ex 33:15). We are to have that same passion for the presence of God in this day.
These seven reasons certainly give us motivation to cry out daily to “be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). So, cry out in your prayer time. Cry out during worship. Pray to be filled with God’s Spirit. And don’t walk through another day without the Holy Spirit’s presence and His attributes in your life.
